How SLWSD Prepares for Storms
Year-Round Readiness:
- Maintains stormwater systems to reduce flooding.
- Ensures water & wastewater services remain active.
- Keeps lift stations and drainage operational.
- Clears debris from primary/secondary roads.
- Provides emergency water if needed.
Our Utilities Plant can operate independently for up to 10 days with backup power and fuel.
We also support the City of Port St. Lucie with:
- Road closures.
- Stormwater control.
- Debris removal.
Hurricane Preparation Timeline:
72 Hours before landfall:
- Drainage basins checked.
- Generators fueled and tested.
- Emergency staff housing secured.
48-24 Hours Before Landfall:
- Equipment staged.
- Fuel tanks delivered.
- Final system checks completed.
Stormwater basins are lowered in advance to reduce flood risk.
After the Storm:
- Clear primary roads first.
- Restore water and check lift stations.
- Coordinate road closures with City's Emergency Operating Center.
- Begin debris removal.
- Provide emergency water if necessary.
How You Can Help:
Before the Storm:
- Secure loose outdoor items.
- Clear nearby storm drains.
- Fill bathtubs and containers with water.
- Sign up for alerts through your HOA or city.
Avoid:
- Placing debris near drains.
- Driving through flooded areas.
- Calling 911 for utility issues
