Conserve Water
Simple Ways to Save Water
Indoors
-
Don’t use toilets as trash cans. Every flush uses 5–7 gallons. Toss tissues, insects, or small waste in the trash instead.
-
Fix leaks quickly. A dripping faucet or running toilet can waste thousands of gallons a year.
-
Turn off the tap. Don’t let water run while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing dishes.
-
Use full loads. Run dishwashers and washing machines only when full. This saves 15–55 gallons per load.
-
Take shorter showers. Low-flow showerheads plus a 5-minute shower can save up to 2,600 gallons a month.
-
Retrofit toilets and fixtures. Low-flow toilets can save 150+ gallons a month.
Outdoors
-
Water lawns wisely. Lawns only need about ½ inch to ¾ inch of water per watering. Water before 9 a.m. or after 6 p.m. to reduce evaporation.
-
Check your irrigation system. Outdoor watering accounts for over 50% of home use. Repair leaks, add drip irrigation, and use moisture sensors to avoid overwatering.
-
Sweep, don’t spray. Use a broom or blower to clean driveways and sidewalks instead of a hose.
-
Choose Florida-friendly plants. Native and drought-tolerant landscaping reduces outdoor water needs dramatically.
Always follow local watering restrictions and conservation rules.
