Stormwater Management

Strom Drain Graphic

Stormwater management is one of the most important functions of the SLWSD's Public Works Department. Our community’s stormwater system is designed to protect homes, roads, and businesses from flooding by safely collecting and directing rainwater away from developed areas and into our network of canals, retention ponds, and wetlands.

When it rains, water flows over streets, sidewalks, and yards into storm drains and underground pipes. These pipes connect to larger drainage structures that carry the water into the District’s canals and retention ponds. From there, the system helps filter and slowly release water back into the environment. This process prevents flooding and helps recharge groundwater supplies while maintaining a balanced water level throughout St. Lucie West.

Our Public Works Department maintains this system through routine inspections, cleaning, and repairs. Crews regularly remove debris, sediment, and vegetation from storm pipes, inlets, and catch basins to ensure they remain clear and fully operational—especially before and after major storms or hurricanes. The team also monitors storm gates and outfall structures that control water levels in the District’s ponds and canals, helping manage high water during heavy rainfall events.

Residents play a critical role in keeping this system working efficiently. It’s important to never dump trash, yard waste, or chemicals into storm drains. These materials don’t disappear—they flow directly into local waterways, where they can cause blockages, pollute the water, and harm fish, birds, and other wildlife. Even small actions, such as sweeping grass clippings back onto the lawn or disposing of household chemicals properly, make a big difference in protecting our shared environment.

By working together to keep our stormwater system clean and functioning, we help safeguard property, prevent flooding, and preserve the natural beauty and health of our community. The District’s proactive maintenance, combined with responsible practices by residents, ensures that St. Lucie West remains resilient and environmentally sound for years to come.

If you witness anyone durmping trash or chemicals into the storm drains, please report it to our Public Works Department. Contact information can be found under our  Contact Us page.
