Water Supply and Treatment System Improvements

Project Overview:
SLWSD is planning to expand and upgrade its water supply and treatment system to meet growing demand and strengthen service reliability. The project includes a new groundwater well, additional reverse osmosis treatment equipment, and improvements to pumps, filtration, disinfection, odor control and electrical systems.
The expansion is designed to provide a dependable drinking water treatment capacity of 5.4 million gallons per day, with backup equipment to help maintain service during maintenance or equipment outages. These improvements will support the community’s future water needs while maintaining compliance with Florida’s drinking water standards.

What is the "Headworks?"
The Headworks is the very first stage of a wastewater treatment plant. It is where raw sewage enters the plant and undergoes preliminary treatment to remove large debris and materials that could damage downstream equipment. The materials filtered here are disposed of in a landfill.
Why is the Headworks important?
Without a headworks pumps would clog, pipes would become blocked, mechanical equipment would wear out much faster, treatment efficiency would decrease, and maintenance costs would increase significantly.
