Address a Water Leak

Water leaks can cause serious damage if not addressed quickly. Even small leaks can weaken walls, floors, and foundations over time, leading to costly repairs and potential structural issues. Moisture from leaks often creates ideal conditions for mold and mildew growth, which can affect indoor air quality and pose health risks. Leaking pipes can also waste significant amounts of water, increasing utility bills and putting unnecessary strain on the water system. In severe cases, untreated leaks can result in flooding, property damage, and service disruptions—making early detection and repair essential for protecting your home, your health, and your wallet.

Below are steps you should take when addressing a water leak.

Steps to Address a Water Leak

Step 1.Turn off the main water valve

This shut-off valve is usually located between the SLWSD water meter and your property (usually outside). If you are unable to locate this valve right away, call us and we will help you find it.

Step 2.Locate the leak

You might have to do this before Step 1 if you need the water running to locate the leak.

Step 3.Fix the leak

If the leak if after the SLWSD water meter you will need to call either your HOA property manager or your contractor/handyman/plumber to fix the pipe or fixture that is causing the leak.

Step 4.Turn the water on and monitor

After turning on the water, monitor the leak location for another 24hrs, to assure the leak does not return. Sometimes pipe glue will not seal properly if proper drying time was not given. The water presssure may sometimes cause the new seal to break, so it is important to monitor the new fixture for the next 24hrs.
