Flush Smart — Toilet Paper Only!

Wastewater Lift Station

The St. Lucie West Services District (SLWSD) operates and maintains 53 wastewater pump stations throughout the community. These stations play a vital role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of wastewater from homes and businesses to the District’s Wastewater Treatment Facility.

How Pump Stations Work

Wastewater pump stations—also known as lift stations—are essential to modern wastewater systems. In areas where gravity alone cannot carry wastewater to the treatment plant, pump stations lift and transport it through pressurized pipelines called force mains.

Each SLWSD pump station includes specialized equipment such as:

  • Wet wells to temporarily hold incoming wastewater.
  • Submersible pumps that lift wastewater to higher elevations.
  • Valves and controls to manage flow and prevent backups.
  • Electrical panels and SCADA systems that allow remote monitoring and alerts to ensure reliable operation.

These stations operate around the clock to maintain public health and environmental protection across the District.

How Residents Can Help

Don't Flush Baby Wipes

Proper wastewater management starts in every home. Residents can help keep the system running efficiently by being mindful of what goes down the drain.

To prevent clogs and equipment damage:

  • Only flush toilet paper.
  • Never flush items like baby wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, dental floss, or grease—even if labeled “flushable.”
  • Dispose of these items in the trash instead.

Every small action helps protect the community’s wastewater system, reduce maintenance costs, and ensure smooth, reliable service for all residents.
